I started using Vim (wikipedia) (VI Improoved) many years ago. There were an old Linux/Unix installations I was working with and a lot of them did not have installed mc which I was used to use for editing text files (more precisely the mcedit). The only editor I found there was the Vim. It was the only sensible way to edit files, so I had to start using it. From beginning I was a little scared and more then disappointed by its strange and totally non-standard behavior. I had to even kill ssh session a few times when I did not know how to exit Vim ;-)
